Zoo Enclosures

Blackfooted Penguins

- Water

There will be water in this zoo enclosure. The main reason for this is because every animal needs water in order to survive. Another reason is that these penguins swim (all penguins do as well). This will be a source of exercise for them. When the air gets warmer (these penguins can live in more tropical weather) they will be able to use this water to cool off.

- Boulders

These boulders will be used in the zoo enclosure. The boulders main reason is to create a more natural environment. The environment these little fellows encounter will not always be flat and boring like a normal beach. Instead they may be crowded with rocks, which is common for them. This will also be a source of fun for them if they want to dive off of them and into the water.

- Sand

This sand will be used in the zoo enclosure. The reason for this is because they live, or scavenge, off beaches. Well, beaches have sand don't they? This will make their habitat more realistic and they will feel at home. Another reason is because it will be gentle on their feet, even though that isn't especially necessary. When they lay nests they can also burrow in the sand like they would in their normal environment.

What do they eat?

Blackfooted Penguins normally eat pelagic fish. These include anchovies, horse mackeral, pilchards, and other small fish. I would say that you feed each penguin about 3 fish a day to keep them healthy and regulated. This would mean that you would be giving one penguin 21 fish a week.
